Amazon.com Review
"Self-publishing," say authors Tom and Marilyn Ross, "is a perfect example of the American dream." The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing, then, is an aspiring self-publisher's dream. "This isn't a book of fancy theory," as the authors put it; "it's a practical handbook of state-of-the-art specifics." In 521 pages, it lays out everything you need to know to publish your own books, from start-up considerations to the possibility of selling to a big publisher: how to choose a name for your press, how to get an ISBN, what cover designs cost, how to find a reliable printer, how to price your book, where to find lighter-weight shipping envelopes, how to generate working capital. The authors' encyclopedic grasp of the ins and outs of self-publishing is matched by their natural good sense about self-promotion. Turn your signings into events, they recommend; get your books into a variety of venues; use the books as fundraisers for organizations; get online and get reviewed online. The price of this book is negligible considering the cost of proper self-publishing (between $12,000 and $25,000), and, oh, the headaches it will spare you! --Jane Steinberg

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone considering self-publishing!   September 27, 1999

I've just self-published my first book, Why Struggle? life istoo short to wear tight shoes. I would never have considered thisoption if I didn't this treasure of a book to reference. My favorite section is the outline in the back of the book that details what to do in each phase of the process. Tom and Marilyn have created an amazing book that covers everything imaginable for self-publishers. I've only implemented some of their suggestions and I've sold over 300 books in less that two months. Because of this book,my dream has because a reality and it wasn't a painful process.

New version of "Guide" is the Rolls-Royce of how-to books!

If you've ever wanted to know anything (or everything) about
self-publishing, the new 4th edition of The Complete Guide to
Self-Publishing is a must. In the beginning, there is a meaty chapter on cyber options that includes print-on-demand pros and cons, e-books, plus packaging and selling book content electronically. The authors address the craft of writing, how to get all the appropriate numbers and listings, set up your own publishing company, design Wow! covers and friendly interiors,
and find affordable quality printing. Throughout the book there is sage advice about marketing and PR. These two have been in the business for 25 years and it shows in this exceptional and creative resource work. Thank heavens the Rosses are lively, amusing, and seasoned writers -- this baby is over 500 pages long! You get real value for your money. If you buy only
one book on the subject, make it this one! (It's also great for ANY writer who wants to better understand the inside workings of the publishing industry...and better promote his or her book.)

5 out of 5 stars SUPER POWERFUL RESOURCE   February 9, 2002

The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing is a powerful resource for all aspects of self-publishing from the beginning idea to having the book in hand, to marketing and selling it yourself. It's jam packed with hints and lessons learned over time-I think-by trial and error and Tom and Marilyn have come out the winners. I especially liked the way they back up each chapter with hard facts, examples of how to do it and stories of those who've made their book a success like all self-publishers want to. Like Marilyn says "Keep at it. If one idea isn't a hit try something else." Web sites, Wisdom and Whimsey at the end of each chapter shows you new sites to check out, gives you thought-provoking quips and summarizes the theme of the chapter. The endless contacts, rich appendixes and web sites are well worth your purchase of the guide. This resource is a must for any author or self publishers desk and library.

Bookstores are a good place for hot coffee and great discoveries. That's where I found myself on a rainy day in Miami when I discovered The 4th Edition of The Complete Guide To Self-Publishing by Tom & Marilyn Ross. I'd already committed every error possible in my own attempts to publish my first novel (The Path To Glory - 1st Books Library). As thunder rolled overhead, I wandered back to the Publishing Section. Hmmmm, a thick book on self-publishing with an attractive yellow cover. Let's see what's inside. Folks, after that, I found myself sitting in a corner hovering over page after page. I looked around at other customers and wondered why someone hadn't grabbed this book before me. I had to have it! I was on my way to teach a college class but found time while sitting in the car before class to read more. I am currently working on a manual for detective fiction writers (I am a former police detective and currently train Investigators). I can't tell you the wealth of information I have gained from this book by Tom & Marilyn Ross. It's the best I have ever seen. They've definitely made a convert out of me. Thanks Tom & Marilyn!
